About the Captain Howey Hotel in New Romney

Captain Howey Hotel – New Romney, Kent

A Rich Railway Heritage

The Captain Howey Hotel is named after Captain J. E. P. Howey, a passionate railway pioneer and local figure. Originally built in the 19th century as the Station Hotel, it welcomed golfers visiting Littlestone Golf Club and travellers exploring the Romney Marsh area. The building also featured rear stables where carriage drivers could rest their horses before continuing their journey.

In 1920, Captain Howey built the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway directly across the road. By 1926, it became officially recognised as the smallest public railway in the world and quickly became a popular attraction, with tourists exploring Romney Marsh, visiting nearby towns, and experiencing one of Kent’s most unique railway journeys.

Role During World War II

During World War II, the railway played an important role when it was taken over by the War Department in 1940 and used during the construction of PLUTO (Pipeline Under The Ocean), which helped supply fuel to Allied forces.

Honouring Captain Howey

Following the death of Captain Howey in 1960, the hotel was renamed the Captain Howey Hotel in recognition of his achievements and lasting contribution to the railway and the local community.
